The Athens Theater served from 1921-1950's as DeLand's center of social activity hosting vaudeville shows, first-run movies, talent contests, and minstrels. During the Depression, it was the only entertainment people could afford according to Bill Dreggors, local historian. The charge was 9 cents to enter because the theater would have had to pay a state entertainment tax if 10 cents was charged. The Athens Theater is not only at the center of downtown DeLand but is also spatially prominent at the foot of Indiana Avenue. It's once stately appearance has sadly declined to its current state. Considering the current physical condition of the theater, it would be too costly and not economically feasible for an investor to renovate and expect a reasonable return on the investment. As a result, unless funded with grant money, the building would most likely remain vacant or would be torn down. The exterior of the structure has been renovated and work is currently underway to restore the interior. Plans are to use the facility as a movie house showing classic films, cartoons, etc. Special performing arts presentations (ballet, opera, plays, concerts) could be accommodated for large audiences, it may also be used for conferences, and meetings as well as for children's educational programs. The seating capacity is over 500 which makes this theater twice as large as any other like facility in the area. Our membership in the League of Historic American Theaters is providing us with professional expertise in the field of historic theater restoration. Their consultant has focused on the feasibility of the restoration and operation of the Athens Theater. At this time we are preparing the foundation for the structure of a comprehensive, well researched and cost effective plan of action. We are excited about saving, rebuilding and operating the Athens Theatre, a success story in the making!
