Time Line of the City of DeLand 1876 * Henry A. DeLand founded the town of DeLand and bought a section of property for $1,000 1882 * Town of DeLand Incorporated. Cyrenious H. Wright is named the first mayor. 1883 * DeLand Academy founded by Henry A. DeLand. 1884 * DeLand Hall built. It is the oldest building still in continuous use for higher education in Florida. 1885 * The first bad freeze in Central Florida since DeLand is founded. All of the fruit crop is lost. * Lue Gim Gong, famed Chinese horticulturalist, comes to DeLand. 1886 * John B. Stetson takes over the endowment for DeLand University, renamed Stetson University. * A train line extends south from Jacksonville bringing with it the telegraph. * September, fire destroys the 100 block of Woodland Boulevard. 1887 * Stetson builds the first electrical plant in Florida, and the first ice plant. * The city installs the first street lights. * DeLand becomes the county seat. 1890 * Telephone service reaches DeLand. 1894 * In December a freeze hurts the fruit crop. A second freeze in January 1895 severely damages the fruit trees. | ||||
